Leigh wears McNabb Jersey, Then Walks!

After a motion-sickness inducing trip on the Port Jefferson Ferry, we arrived at our home sweet home. Leigh decided she was ready to walk.

You can compare to prior attempts at locomotion by DHawk (check out that Eagles jersey) and Leigh!

Pools = Dangerous

At 0700 this morning, Danny insisted on going into the pool. Never mind that the sun was barely up and the air temperature was in the 50s!
Note that "de lifeguard" is cold but attentive.

When it got sunny and beautiful this afternoon Danny was back at the pool. He managed to fall in the deep end, twice (100% submersion with life-threatening potential). Prompt extraction by the lifeguard prevented serious injury. It shook us up enough to go buy a personal flotation device that afternoon. Danny wore this wonderful device out of the store (like DadKV used to do with shoes) and again at home. He recounted the day's events.
"What did you see, Daddy?"
"What did you say to Mommy?"
"What was I doing, Daddy?"

"Did you see my head peek out, Daddy?"

"Was I over der, Daddy?"
"Did you see my arms and legs moving?"
"What happened next, Daddy?"
As MomHV was drying him off after the second time, he said, "Two times was cool, Mommy!"

At bedtime SHV told him, "get ready for another good day of vacation tomorrow."
"With no drownin, Mommy!"

Sag Harbor

Posting while on vacation is always a fun thing!
D-Hawk had a great day at school on Tuesday - no accidents, no crying, better socialization. Afterwards, we scooped him up and headed for Sag Harbor, NY.

Here's the boss man scoping things out with some binoculars, topside on the ferry. It was a pretty cool moment when he realized he could actually see things through the binocs. (He also asked to wear the McNabb jersey to school!) The next morning was microfleece pajama-time!Leigh liked it.Outside, a polar bear with a farmer's tan was spotted. After this, our little polar bear (now 100% potty trained, thank goodness) sat on the toilet and said to Daddy, "sometimes the polar bear has to use the potty with his Daddy."

Running to throw a croc in the pool.

Happy Birthday Grandpa!

Enjoying our new mobility once again, SHV loaded kids and au pair into the van on Sunday and took them down to Long Island for Grandpa Lee's birthday celebration. (Poor DKV had to work of course). Upon arriving, DHV immediately demanded that Sandma Steffie join him in the yard for some soccer.

While big brother was burning off some energy outside, Li-li discovered the joy of chasing poor old Suki around the house.

After a while Aunt Molly had to intervene so Suki could get some peace.

Once Sandma got distracted by preparing dinner, DHV discovered the joys of watching Uncle Paul blow great big bubbles.

And Leigh wowed us all with her new peekaboo skills.

"Lawning"

D Hawk got his own lawnmower for his birthday. Every morning he asks to go outside and "lawn!" He is very good about wearing eye and ear protection, too.
He likes his guitar, too. This is the rare electronic toy that isn't very loud. And the family all dressed up for the Eagles!DHawk supporting Leigh's head and neck region.

First Day Of School!

Today was Danny's first day of preschool.
It started off around 0430am, with a bout of coughing that woke him up. He never went back to sleep.
He was in good spirits, wearing his backpack . . .
. . . and striding to school.
He wanted to grow some monkey arms and get to some high-up parent pockets.
The gathering storm!
First he painted.
Then he wrote a story with DaDKV.
Then he washed his hands for 10 minutes. The low sink was a real hit.
Then he played nicely at the water table.
We made our move to leave. He ran over to give Mommy one more hug and slipped, hitting his head on the floor. Crying ensued, so Mommy read him a story.
Then we left, expecting a call, "You better get back here right away, he's going thermonuclear!" but it never came. We hung out at Yale and headed back for the pickup. Here's SHV at noon, lined up with the other parents.
The doors opened and - total meltdown!
Poor guy had a so-so day. Separation + toilet training is no fun. We cheered him up with some Brueger's Bagels and he seems excited for his next day (Tuesday). Susannah is going to stay that day to help ease the transition. Oh boy.

Danny's Third Birthday

The little guy turned 3! The Germans spent a lot of time shopping for him. Everything is so cheap here compared to the Bundesrepublik Deutschland that they'll spend hours at Target buying stuff.
Safety goggles and a power drill. That will make a kid happy.
Leigh took the opportunity to grab an old power drill.
The Germans sharing an inside joke.
All the ladies putting their heads together. I thought the world might end if all those tips touched and formed a singularity.Li-Li tolerates her party hat.
