Camer and Leonard in the Haven

This weekend brought Yalies NMC and MLL to the Haven. Here's the obligatory picture of Matt with a beer and funny look.
After seeing a bit of DHV, we put them to work on some doors that don't quite shut all the way. Matt and HusbandKV managed to make this one even more difficult to close after tweaking it six different ways.
We popped some bubbly to celebrate Nick's imminent employment as Professor of Art History at the flagship university of the great "Pelican State" of Louisiana, LSU. Courses 4405 and 1440 are the ones we're looking forward to seeing in podcast form. Matt, ever the gentleman, shared with DHV.
Even after [redacted], Nick was up after only 5 hours of sleep. It must have been that extra "potency" after his trip to Europe - maybe he picked up something from the Tour de France cyclists! Male pattern baldness is a known side effect of testosterone; DHV inspected the damage and tried to cheer NMC up, "My hair used to be like this, but look at what I have now!"
Playstation and a smiling baby; what more could an art professor want? After our friends left, the whole family devoted ourselves to cleaning up the cardboard that New Haven's finest unionized sanitation divas neglected to pick up for 3 weeks. Maybe if we disguise it as trash they'll get the point?

Learning to Swim

Family V convened at the YMCA early Saturday morning for DHV's third swim class. The first class was largely an exercise in whimpering and clinging/clawing to Mommy but the little guy showed marked improvement in class #2 and continued that trend today.

Daddy eased him into the chilly water nice and slow.

He seemed to like the noodle a lot better than that kid in front of him.

Floating like this brought back fond memories of the womb.

DHV was a little surprised by the dunking part; if Mommy had only had the video camera we could share footage of the pseudo-seizure he had after emerging from the water. Unfortunately she didn't so all you get is this post-dunk shot...

... and this post-dunk expression.

He cheered right up though!

Internet Connections

Mommy and DHV endured hellish Friday afternoon traffic en route to NYC for a whirlwind visit. The family returned to the scene of last post's race for the main event, an internet-organized multi-baby playdate in Manhattan. Here's DHV in the middle of the action.
"Hey, gimme that!"
Mommy got a new look, which she modeled back in New Haven on Sunday.
"Hmmm, should I bite her shoulder or pull her hair?"
Aunt Molly finally made it up to CT to see the new house and her favorite nephew. He wowed her with his crawling, climbing, and standing abilities.
"I bet I could climb right over this thing and get a hold on her hair before she knows what's happening."
HusbandKV spent the weekend learning that community emergency medicine is BUSY. He also got an article published!

Taking over the Internets

DHV finds himself the subject of thrid-party documentation.
The event photographer for HusbandKV's race found DHV and DHV ate the camera up!
DHV at the race. He spent hours getting his hair just right for this shot.
Here are his parents.
And HusbandKV.

WifeSHV also snapped some digitals for the blog.

Grandparents and Cardboard

Grandpa Lee and Grandma Stef made the trip up the day after the Grandparents V and got to see the grill and DHV in action. Here Grandpa Lee looks on proudly at the chaos created by DHV.
In honor of the midweek heatwave we inflated the kiddie pool and set DHV to work on it. He seemed to warm to it after some initial hesitation.
People may have been wondering just what these new homeowners have been up to. Here's a short photographic tour.

A new mailbox. DKV unsuccessfully tried to sledgehammer it through a large buried tree stump ("I knew that spot was too clean!") and wound up digging a hole and pouring some concrete.
Our uber-organized basement, or "Shelf City, U.S.A." The shelving instructions said "assembles in minutes." Indeed, they did; the organization took days!
A backyard compost bin:
A Hydrangea (a bit sad looking in this pre-blog nighttime shot):
Wee trellis climbers:
A window box:
And lastly, the cardboard. The move generated a LOT of cardboard. We set one batch on the curb and watched it not get collected; our realtor clued us in to New Haven's requirement to tie it with twine. We slogged out to the curb to find salvation - someone had come by and picked up our load of boxes. Well, one more week of unpacking this and that, buying odds and ends, and getting deliveries of the good, the bad, and the ugly created another Godzilla pile of cardboard which occupied our garage in an open and notorious manner. WifeHV and HusbandKV tied it all up in neat bundles and set it out for trash day.

It stayed on the curb for two days, until we called New Haven Public Works today. Oh, it has to be tied in 3x4 foot bundles, they tell us. Mind you, this information is not made widely available to the general public. "Sanitation Divas" is what WifeHV aptly titled them. So we trudged out to the curb, piled the nearly wrapped cardboard on top of the Accord, and brought it back to the garage. Here it is; some more of it is hiding behind that mother load!
Anyway, armed with a boxcutter (good idea, Matt), some cooking twine, and touch of rage, HusbandKV made a full frontal attack on that pile of cardboard.
Look upon my Works, ye Mighty, and despair! Exactly 3 feet by 4 feet by 4 feet. Only 5 days until trash day; maybe we'll only find 50 spiders when we move the stack for the third time.

Moving to New Haven

DHV packed up his toys and parents and got them moved up to New Haven, where lots of floors and rooms were explored. Long straightaways let DHV get up to top speed.
DHV tried to get on the Internets and use the Google ; who needs DSL, cable, or dial-up when you can get drool-up?The flat-rate movers appreciated DHV's laessiz-faire supervising style.
Once the FlatRate boys headed out, MLL and SJM stopped by and just couldn't stop being helpful. Gates were fixed, grills used, and babies were proofed. Stars and moons briefly aligned for this snapshot; notice the glasses of champagne, Matt and Stacey Jo got engaged! MLL must have finally heeded that ticking noise.
Pancake breakfast is a lot easier when you've got a Connecticut-sized griddle at the ready!
Grandparent Lindy got in some quality New Haven time, and chowed on Modern Apizza.
DHV had his first swimming lesson. He seemed to like modeling his new trunks more than the water, though.Grandparents V defied all expectations and made a quick trip up, bearing tamago and boxes of cereal, sort of like a UN relief mission.DHV helped his parents set up some furniture . . .. . . but neglected to let on that he had a present for us!

West meets East

Ok. This post is way overdue, a bit stale, perhaps.
Interstate moving has disrupted our blogging, but not our digital archiving of family and friends.
Several weeks ago Cousin Ida packed up her super-neat father Uncle Pete and Aunt ERV to fly out to the Filthadelaphia and H-field. Cousin Elsie packed up Aunt MAV and flew in from the Vineyard to make it an all-3 cousins swap meet.

Poor Uncle Pete, aka "Mr. N"; his wife ERV and daughter IAR (aka Ms. Hair) kept him up all night.
Don't worry, Cousin Ida kept him alert with demands; here she requests immediate hair styling.
DHV was laid low by his first cold let everyone know it.
3 moms and 3 grandchildren! What's Ida doing over there?
EAB v DHV in a staring contest. Elsie seems to be losing her tri-hawk.
DHV demonstrating the two-handed hair-pulling technique. Elsie watches closely.
