Lighthouse Point

Thursday we drove over to Lighthouse Point, a beach park free for New Haven residents. DHV whined a bit in the beginning.

So we retreated to the blanket, where HusbandKV earned his keep as a human beach umbrella.
And we filled DHV up with yummy goodness.
And ignored his concerned seaward gaze.
And sent him back out. He was splashing in no time.
DHV gave a big toes up to the beach day!
And practiced his freestyle.
In the end everyone was happy!

Grandparents and Cardboard

Grandpa Lee and Grandma Stef made the trip up the day after the Grandparents V and got to see the grill and DHV in action. Here Grandpa Lee looks on proudly at the chaos created by DHV.
In honor of the midweek heatwave we inflated the kiddie pool and set DHV to work on it. He seemed to warm to it after some initial hesitation.
People may have been wondering just what these new homeowners have been up to. Here's a short photographic tour.

A new mailbox. DKV unsuccessfully tried to sledgehammer it through a large buried tree stump ("I knew that spot was too clean!") and wound up digging a hole and pouring some concrete.
Our uber-organized basement, or "Shelf City, U.S.A." The shelving instructions said "assembles in minutes." Indeed, they did; the organization took days!
A backyard compost bin:
A Hydrangea (a bit sad looking in this pre-blog nighttime shot):
Wee trellis climbers:
A window box:
And lastly, the cardboard. The move generated a LOT of cardboard. We set one batch on the curb and watched it not get collected; our realtor clued us in to New Haven's requirement to tie it with twine. We slogged out to the curb to find salvation - someone had come by and picked up our load of boxes. Well, one more week of unpacking this and that, buying odds and ends, and getting deliveries of the good, the bad, and the ugly created another Godzilla pile of cardboard which occupied our garage in an open and notorious manner. WifeHV and HusbandKV tied it all up in neat bundles and set it out for trash day.

It stayed on the curb for two days, until we called New Haven Public Works today. Oh, it has to be tied in 3x4 foot bundles, they tell us. Mind you, this information is not made widely available to the general public. "Sanitation Divas" is what WifeHV aptly titled them. So we trudged out to the curb, piled the nearly wrapped cardboard on top of the Accord, and brought it back to the garage. Here it is; some more of it is hiding behind that mother load!
Anyway, armed with a boxcutter (good idea, Matt), some cooking twine, and touch of rage, HusbandKV made a full frontal attack on that pile of cardboard.
Look upon my Works, ye Mighty, and despair! Exactly 3 feet by 4 feet by 4 feet. Only 5 days until trash day; maybe we'll only find 50 spiders when we move the stack for the third time.

Moving to New Haven

DHV packed up his toys and parents and got them moved up to New Haven, where lots of floors and rooms were explored. Long straightaways let DHV get up to top speed.
DHV tried to get on the Internets and use the Google ; who needs DSL, cable, or dial-up when you can get drool-up?The flat-rate movers appreciated DHV's laessiz-faire supervising style.
Once the FlatRate boys headed out, MLL and SJM stopped by and just couldn't stop being helpful. Gates were fixed, grills used, and babies were proofed. Stars and moons briefly aligned for this snapshot; notice the glasses of champagne, Matt and Stacey Jo got engaged! MLL must have finally heeded that ticking noise.
Pancake breakfast is a lot easier when you've got a Connecticut-sized griddle at the ready!
Grandparent Lindy got in some quality New Haven time, and chowed on Modern Apizza.
DHV had his first swimming lesson. He seemed to like modeling his new trunks more than the water, though.Grandparents V defied all expectations and made a quick trip up, bearing tamago and boxes of cereal, sort of like a UN relief mission.DHV helped his parents set up some furniture . . .. . . but neglected to let on that he had a present for us!

DHV Gets a New House!

Last week we packed up and headed to CT for the much-anticipated closing on our new house. We crashed with the ever-hospitable Luce family one last time the night before the closing. DHV took over Caroline's jumperoo and did some furious bouncing while she looked on. That girl is such a good sport!

She quickly tired of his babyish antics and walked (yes, walked!) away. Here's the kind of mess that Mommy V has to look forward to once DHV starts feeding himself. Yikes!

The next morning DHV made himself at home in the lawyer's office, spreading his toys all over the floor, banging them against the wall, and generally wreaking havoc. He also attracted a lot of attention from the office staff. Not much work was getting done there that morning!

After signing a few hundred documents we picked up some sandwiches and had a picnic in our new yard. Check out that swingset! DHV is gonna be rockin' and rollin' once we attach a baby swing to that thing and set up the kiddie pool out there.
